Youth Tour Of Scotland 2019

South Region Riders Take Part in Best Youth Tour of the Season

April 2019 saw the South Youth team take part in the Youth Tour of Scotland. This 3 day 4 stage race is one of the key races of the season for the UK’s Youth riders. 4 boys and 4 girls were selected; Matthew Kickman, Nathaniel Brooks, Bryn Ruck and Jacob Schnarbel for the boys and Laura Curle, Niamh Murphy, Katie-Ann Calton and Maddie Cooper for the girls.

As is usual for Scotland this time of year the weather was part of the story of the weekend, being wet, windy and cold…. There were two road stages, a team timer trial and a Belgian kermesse style race around the school grounds where the race was staying. We had a mixture of luck in the races with crashes and mechanicals affecting the results. However, all the riders rode incredibly well, with the girls coming 3rd best team.

Key for the South though was the experience the riders gained. As a region we spend a lot of time supporting the training and racing of our youth and junior riders. The only way to improve is to ride tough races and events that take people out of their comfort zones. Scotland certainly did that.
